MLS Fantasy Round 7 wrap-up

Round seven didn’t disappoint, and we’ve got more surprises in the list of top scorers this time around!  Minnesota bagged themselves another point against Houston, Seattle lost a Cascadia matchup in the dying minutes of the game, Chicago buries three to shut out New England, and RSL makes a late-game comeback to secure three points in Colorado.  This week was nothing short of action packed.

Top performers

1. MF Bastian Schweinsteiger ($9.3m) – 14 points

Round 7 scoring breakdown:

  • Goals (1): 5
  • Assists (1): 3
  • Minutes played (90): 2
  • Pass completion (87%): 2
  • Attacking bonus: 1
  • Clean sheet: 1

Schweinsteiger has now scored 28 points in his first three games, averaging 9.3 points per game.  If he’s not on your fantasy team by now, he absolutely should be.  The 32-year-old is proving why he’s one of the last pieces Chicago needed to become a playoff team in the East.

Round 8 match-up: Toronto FC (A)

2. DF Jimmy Medranda ($5.5m) – 13 points

Round 7 scoring breakdown:

  • Clean sheet: 5
  • Assists (1): 3
  • Defending bonus: 2
  • Minutes played (90): 2
  • Attacking bonus: 1

Medranda had himself another productive week as SKC shut out the Portland Timbers at Providence Park.  This dude was on our list a couple weeks ago for top picks, and I don’t think he’s quite done making that list consistently yet — although I could easily see Kansas City picking up their first loss of the season when they visit Dallas this weekend — but I’ve been wrong before.

Round 8 match-up: FC Dallas (A)

T-3. FW Fredy Montero ($9.2m) – 12 points

Round 7 scoring breakdown:

  • Goals (2): 10
  • Minutes played (90): 2
  • Defending bonus: 1
  • Yellow cards (1): -1

Not a ton of bonus points here, but Montero finds himself tied for third place in round 7 after scoring a brace to earn the Whitecaps a win over the Sounders.  With only a 1.4% selection rate, there are a lucky few fantasy managers who got to reap the benefits of his great week.

Round 8 match-up: Portland Timbers (A)

T-3. FW Nemanja Nikolic ($9.6m) – 12 points

Round 7 scoring breakdown:

  • Goals scored (2): 10
  • Minutes played (90): 2

Rounding out Chicago’s three-goal game was Nemaja Nikolic who supplemented Bastian’s goal with two of his own.  No bonus points to be had, but if Chicago keeps playing like this then expect Nikolic to keep bagging himself goals on a regular basis.

Round 8 match-up: Toronto FC (A)

T-5. DF Alexander Callens ($4.9m) – 11 points

Round 7 scoring breakdown:

  • Clean sheet: 5
  • Defending bonus: 2
  • Pass completion (85%): 2
  • Minutes played (90): 2

Rounding out the list is a pair of NYCFC defenders, the first being Callens.  NYC ended up being a fantastic clean sheet pick this week as they banged in two goals and kept a shut out against the winless Philadelphia.  Callens is a cheap option for defenders going forward.

Round 8 match-up: Orlando City SC (H)

T-5. DF Ronald Matarrita ($6.4m) – 11 points

Round 7 scoring breakdown:

  • Clean sheet: 5
  • Assists (1): 3
  • Minutes played (90): 2
  • Defending bonus: 1
  • Pass completion (88%): 1
  • Yellow cards (1): -1

Without his yellow card he would have finished higher than his teammate Callens by a point, but he still ended up being a great grab for anyone who had him.  While more expensive than Callens at $6.4m, Matarrita has scored 10+ points in three of his six games played.

Round 8 match-up: Orlando City SC (H)
